ROCKFORD – Tony Comden was attending friend Nate Hurwitz’s funeral last September when he felt a big slap on his back.
Comden, of Zeeland, turned to find Hurwitz’s father, Dan Hurwitz, standing behind him with words of encouragement.
“We have to get this done,” Comden said, reflecting on what Dan Hurwitz told him nearly eight months ago. “We have to get this done.”
Comden and Dan Hurwitz’s mission took a big step toward reality Wednesday, May 15, when the West Michigan Miracle League hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for Nate Hurwitz Field, which is tentatively scheduled to open in September.
The field, which is being designed to host games for children with physical and mental disabilities, is included in the West Michigan Sports Commission’s Art Van Sports Complex, 3300 Ten Mile Road in Rockford. Construction for the complex, which will offer 12 baseball and softball fields, began last September.
