GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Justin Verlander was a decent young baseball player, but his parents did something they feel made a huge difference in his life.

They didn’t push.

As their oldest son grew from good to impressive to coveted, Richard and Kathy Verlander stressed perspective and let him discover if baseball was, indeed, his passion.

“We always tried to maintain some perspective and not be so laser-focused on one sport and one activity,” said his father. “He played basketball, was in Cub Scouts and active in church. We just feel balance is a big key, and today it seems so many young people are taught to focus on one sport before they’re even 10 years old.”
